Puerto Rican Voices and Legacy In Miami-Dae County, Florida: A social history
The history of Puerto Ricans who have migrated to Miami-Dade County, Florida from the 1940s to contemporary times is investigated under the paradigms of cultural history and transnationalism in this book. Their history and achievements in Miami-Dae County are gathered through interviews with 17 Puerto Rican community leaders who span different ages, statuses, times, and roles in their community; thus, presenting a broad spectrum of individual and collective memory, and first hand observations. Theoretical discussions, interview findings and the author's field observations support the existence of an indelible national self-identity Puerto Ricans outside the island preserve as Puerto Ricans. The role of community events, non-profit organizations and professional networks in the preservation of a collective identity and individual adaptation is examined here.
